How TCM Understands Infertility

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fertility is seen as a reflection of the body’s internal harmony, especially the strength and balance of the Kidney, Liver, Spleen, and the smooth flow of Qi and Blood. When these systems are out of balance, it can affect natural conception. Common TCM patterns contributing to infertility include:

  • Kidney Deficiency – The Kidneys store reproductive essence (Jing) and govern growth, development, and hormonal regulation. A deficiency may lead to poor egg or sperm quality and hormonal imbalances.

  • Liver Qi Stagnation – The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and Blood. If Liver Qi is blocked, it may result in irregular menstruation, anovulation, emotional stress, or painful periods.

  • Spleen Qi Deficiency – The Spleen governs digestion and the production of Qi and Blood. A weak Spleen can lead to insufficient Blood, which may affect the uterine lining, implantation, or increase the risk of miscarriage.

  • Blood Deficiency or Blood Stasis – This can affect endometrial health, menstrual flow, or cause conditions like fibroids or endometriosis, interfering with conception.

  • Cold in the Uterus – Internal Cold (from constitution, environment, or diet) can constrict the uterus and hinder embryo implantation and development.

Each individual is assessed through a personalized consultation, including symptom discussion, tongue diagnosis, and pulse reading, allowing for a tailored treatment plan that addresses the root cause of imbalance.

Treatment Course & What to Expect

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, preparing the body well in advance is essential for improving fertility outcomes. Ideally, treatment begins 3–6 months before trying to conceive or starting an IVF cycle. This preparation phase focuses on regulating menstruation, enhancing the quality of egg and sperm, and improving the overall function of the Liver, Spleen, and Kidneys—the key organs involved in reproductive health.

Pre-conception Phase (3–6 months)

  • Weekly acupuncture and herbal therapy are used to:

  • Regulate the menstrual cycle

  • Improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries

  • Boost energy (Qi) and nourish the Blood

  • Balance hormones and reduce stress

  • Support optimal egg/sperm development

During IVF Cycle

  • Acupuncture is carefully timed to each stage:

  • Downregulation: Calm the nervous system and support hormonal balance

  • Stimulation phase: Enhance follicular response and reduce side effects

  • Egg retrieval: Support recovery and circulation

  • Embryo transfer: Improve uterine receptivity and reduce cramping

  • Post-transfer: Focus on relaxation, implantation, and miscarriage prevention

Herbal Medicine

Individualized herbal formulas may be prescribed during different phases to strengthen the body, regulate hormones, and support implantation—based on your TCM diagnosis.

  • Communicate openly about your IVF schedule for optimal coordination

3. Acupuncture effects on in-vitro fertilization pregnancy outcomes: A meta-analysis (2021)

Clinical studies have shown that using acupuncture alongside IVF may significantly improve biochemical, clinical, and ongoing pregnancy rates—as well as live birth outcomes—when compared to having no additional support. While further research is needed to compare acupuncture with placebo (sham) treatments, current evidence supports acupuncture as a safe and promising complementary therapy for women undergoing fertility treatment.
